Read Genesis 3:14â15. Imagine you are Eve. What would you have thought and felt about Godâs judgment on the Serpent? Why?
Eve must have listened intently to the curse the Lord placed on the one who had crafted her downfall. First, the Serpent that had appeared so attractive and winsome would forever crawl on his belly and eat dirt. The image is one of extreme humiliation.
Second, there would be âenmityâ between the woman and the Serpent and between their offspring. This doesnât mean that women would hate snakes (though most of us do!). âEnmityâ describes a murderous level of animosity and the type of intense hostility expressed in war (Num. 35:21; Ezek. 25:15). It indicates a fierce conflict of life-and-death proportions.
Finally, God foretold: âHe shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.â This speaks of the battle between Christ and Satan. God knew that the two would fight and wound each other. But Christâs wound would heal (and would become a means of sinners being healed), whereas Satanâs wound would be fatal. Jesus would ultimately crush Satan under his feet (Rom. 16:20). In essence, God told Satan:
âEat dirt!â
âThe fight is on!â
âYouâre going to lose!!â
Eve couldnât have fully understood what God was talking about, but she must have caught the glimmer of hope. Godâs promise that the seed of the woman would be victorious over the Serpent confirmed that His great love, grace, and mercy would triumph over Satan, sin, and judgment.
Just imagine how Eve must have felt at that moment. She probably hadnât yet fully processed the conflicting emotions of disgust and fascination that rushed in when her eyes were opened to sin. She was likely still reeling from the flood of hurt, resentment, and self-protective blame that swept over her with Adamâs betrayal. Not only that, she had to deal with the shame and self-consciousness of standing in Godâs holy presence. She probably couldnât look Him in the eye.
